What is Pre-Shrink Treatment for Silk Fabric?

2024.07.17

What is Pre-Shrink Treatment for Silk Fabric?

Pre-shrink treatment is a process that uses physical methods to reduce the shrinkage of fabric after washing, minimizing overall shrinkage. For example, silk double georgette typically has a normal shrinkage rate of 10-15%. However, after pre-shrinking, this rate can be reduced to just 3-5%.

  • This process, also known as mechanical pre-shrink finishing, mainly focuses on controlling the lengthwise (warp) shrinkage of the fabric. Before pre-shrinking, silk fabric can have a warp shrinkage of 5% to 15%. After treatment, the standard for warp shrinkage is often reduced to 3% according to national standards, or 1% according to American standards. The American standard is stricter, where 1% equates to 3% in national standards.
  • Fabrics like plain satin, stretch satin, and chiffon usually have a shrinkage rate of around 5%, so if the product does not have strict shrinkage requirements, this treatment can sometimes be overlooked. However, for fabrics like silk double georgette, double georgette, and georgette, which typically have shrinkage rates over 10%, pre-shrinking is essential before cutting to prevent post-production shrinkage. In fact, silk crepe georgette can shrink by more than 25%!
  • Pre-shrink treatment ensures that the finished garments maintain their intended size and fit after washing, making it a crucial step in the production of silk fabrics.
