How to Make Silk Fabric Softer?
Silk garments become softer with repeated washing over time. There are two main methods to soften silk during production: chemical treatment and physical treatment.
- Chemical Treatment: Softening agents are added during the dyeing and finishing process to change the surface friction coefficients of the silk fibers. When the static friction coefficient is altered, the fabric feels smooth to the touch and moves easily. When the dynamic friction coefficient is changed, the microstructure of the fibers moves more freely, making the fabric easier to deform. The combination of these effects results in a softer feel. However, using too much softening agent can make the silk fibers overly slippery, leading to fabric tearing.
- Physical Treatment: Commonly known as "air beating" or "cold air beating," this method uses air or mechanical beating to soften the silk fabric. Airflow is used to gently beat the silk fabric, avoiding the creases or friction that mechanical methods might cause, thus preventing damage to the fabric.
- For Purchased Silk Garments: Always follow the washing instructions for silk and avoid alkaline detergents. Alkaline detergents can make silk garments stiff.
- By understanding and applying these methods, you can help keep your silk garments soft and in good condition.
