Characteristics of Silk Duchesse Satin Fabric

• Texture and Appearance: Duchesse satin is known for its stiffness and robust texture. It has a pearly sheen on one side, while the other side is typically matte. This fabric is made from semi-raw silk, meaning that half of the silk used retains its sericin (silk gum).
• Durability and Care: The presence of sericin makes the fabric stiff and durable. However, repeated washing, high temperatures, and prolonged soaking can cause the sericin to dissolve, making the fabric softer and potentially leading to shrinkage.
• Feel and Quality: Silk duchesse satin is quite firm and can hold creases well. It is available in soft hues such as white, ivory, and cream. Due to its high momme weight (26.5 and above), it is considered a heavyweight silk, adding to its luxurious feel and higher price point.
